Two Cities, One Wedding: A Mumbai to Toronto Story
Words by Forum Dhanak · 24 September 2026

A mehendi on a Mumbai terrace, a gurudwara morning in Toronto, and a butter chicken station with a forty minute queue.
Their families met for the first time on a video call with a nine and a half hour time difference. The wedding had to close that gap.
The Format
Rhea's Mumbai. Daniel's Toronto. The answer was not a compromise city but two ceremonies, six weeks apart, each done properly.
The Mumbai weekend was hers: a mehendi on the terrace she grew up on, pheras at a heritage bungalow, and a sangeet where his cousins from Canada performed a bhangra they learned on YouTube, badly, gloriously.
Toronto was his: a gurudwara ceremony in the morning and a warehouse reception where the butter chicken station had a forty minute queue and was worth it.
A diaspora wedding is not two families meeting. It is two worlds discovering they already knew each other.
What Travelled Between the Two
The same photographer at both. A documentarian's dream: the same couple, two geographies, one story. The films play back to back now, and nobody can pick a favourite.
